Environmental Conservation

Environmental conservation is an important mission of We Got Your Back NGO, committed to promoting community well-being through a variety of climate actions in Rwanda. We actively engage in tree planting initiatives, including establishing tree nurseries to ensure sustainable reforestation and ecosystem restoration. Our focus extends to land restoration projects that combat soil degradation, enhance agricultural productivity, and restore natural habitats. We are dedicated to protecting forests, a crucial resource for biodiversity and climate stability, by advocating for policies and practices that prevent deforestation and promote sustainable land use.

Our efforts contribute to Rwanda’s broader climate action goals, aligning with national strategies to combat climate change. We empower communities, especially youth, by promoting sustainable agricultural practices, offering training and resources to help individuals adopt green farming techniques that protect the environment and improve livelihoods. Through these initiatives, we proudly support the “Green Rising” implementation in Rwanda as the leading youth-led organization to implement the program, driving a vision of climate resilience and sustainability. By combining environmental education, eco-innovation, and agricultural empowerment, we are building a greener, more resilient future for all.

Gender equality and Social Inclusion

At We Got Your Back (WGYB) NGO, Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) are integral to our mission of empowering children and youth from underserved communities. We recognize that achieving true empowerment requires addressing the social barriers that prevent equal access to opportunities for all young people, regardless of their gender, sexual orientation, ability, race, ethnicity, or religion. By promoting GESI, we aim to create a fair, inclusive society where every individual, particularly those from marginalized groups, has the opportunity to thrive.

Our Approach to Gender Equality and Social Inclusion

We believe that every young person, regardless of their background, deserves the same opportunities for growth and development. Therefore, WGYB actively works to dismantle gender and social barriers that hinder the full participation of all children and youth. This approach ensures that we contribute to building a community where inclusion is at the heart of everything we do.

Our initiatives foster a culture where young people are treated equally, encouraged to pursue their dreams, and supported in overcoming obstacles based on their gender, socio-economic status, or any other form of exclusion. This commitment is underpinned by the following key actions:

  • Promoting Gender Equality

We advocate for the equal treatment of girls, boys, and individuals of all genders, ensuring that they have access to the same opportunities in education, health, and employment. By challenging gender stereotypes and societal norms, we aim to reduce gender-based discrimination and violence. Through workshops, mentorship, and educational programs, we work to empower girls and young women, giving them the tools to take charge of their own futures and make meaningful contributions to their communities.

  • Engaging Men and Boys

We recognize that achieving true gender equality requires the active participation of men and boys. As such, we critically engage men and boys in challenging traditional gender norms and attitudes that perpetuate inequality. By involving them in discussions about gender, we aim to transform attitudes towards women and girls, encourage positive behaviors, and promote shared responsibility in creating an equitable society. Our programs involve men and boys as allies, advocating for gender equality and helping to prevent gender-based violence.

  • Inclusive Education

We focus on promoting education that is accessible to all, particularly for marginalized groups such as girls, children with disabilities, and those from disadvantaged backgrounds. We provide specialized support to ensure that every child and youth, regardless of gender or social background, has access to quality education. This includes offering scholarships, specialized learning materials, and mentorship to help those who may face social or economic barriers to succeed.

  • Social Inclusion of Marginalized Groups

WGYB recognizes that certain groups, including youth with disabilities, those from lower socio-economic backgrounds, and ethnic minorities, face multiple layers of exclusion. Our work focuses on ensuring that these groups are not left behind but are included in all our initiatives. We promote the active participation of marginalized youth in decision-making processes, providing them with platforms to share their voices and contribute to community development.

  • Empowerment through Leadership

By fostering youth leadership, we ensure that young people, particularly girls and other marginalized groups, have the confidence and skills to become agents of change. We provide opportunities for leadership training, mentorship, and active participation in decision-making. Through these initiatives, youth are encouraged to take leadership roles, advocate for their rights, and push for policies that promote equality and inclusivity.

  • Zero Tolerance for Discrimination

WGYB maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy towards any form of discrimination, including gender-based violence, sexual harassment, or any other type of social exclusion. This principle guides all of our operations, ensuring that every young person feels safe, valued, and respected within the organization and in the communities we serve.
